Pantone Colour of the Year 2022 – what is it and why does it matter?

Newcomer Very Peri wins the title

If you’re involved in producing, manufacturing or designing pretty much anything, you’ll know that Pantone is regarded as the colour expert.

Every year for over 20 years they pick a colour from their existing palette range to be crowned Colour of the Year.

The significance of the colour is huge: it sets trends across multiple fields and industries, from fashion and home furnishings to branding and packaging.

It’s been quite a debut for Very Peri

This year is the first year that a brand new colour just introduced into the palette has taken the title.

Laurie Pressman, the Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute said they made this decision due to the unprecedented times (there’s that phrase again) we have found ourselves in. It is “a nod to the rapid global transformation and innovation we have witnessed in the past year”.

She continues that “as a society, we increasingly recognize colour as a critical form of communication of ideas, emotions, and thoughts and as a way to connect with our fellow human beings.

The Blues have it…

Ever since the first Colour of the Year was awarded in 2000 (Cerulean Blue in case you’re wondering), members of the blue family have received the title many times.

Over the years we’ve seen Aqua Sky, Blue Turquoise, Blue Iris, Turquoise, Serenity, Ultra Violet, and Classic Blue.

Coincidence? Hardly. Blues have always had a secure place in colour psychology as imparting calm, stability and trust.

They are also known for conveying a sense of reliability and responsibility, which is why they’re so regularly the brand colour of choice for financial institutions and healthcare bodies.

The number of tech companies choosing to ‘go blue’ is no coincidence either, with the colour group recognised as standing for technological and digital advances.

So how best to sum up Very Peri?

Colour is hugely subjective, but we’re big fans. Very Peri has the faithfulness of blue with the energy and excitement of red. It’s cheerful, happy and warm.

(Trust us, we would not have been so happy to paint our nails luminous yellow).

Here’s what they say:

“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”

Very Peri, we salute you.

You deserve to wear your perfect purple periwinkle crown throughout 2022.
